Film Says Corporate Tax Avoidance Clouding Modern States [Excerpts]

While the practice of corporate “inversion” may be generating headlines in the business world, a new documentary argues the *larger* issue of tax avoidance has become a major subversion of the global order.

“The Price We Pay,” which makes its world premiere at the Toronto Internaional Film Festival today, suggests that the ability of corporations and wealthy individuals to keep their cash *beyond the reach* of public treasuries has upended the working of liberal states while exacerbating income inequality.  The governments’ inability or unwillingness to act, never mind organize a coordinated global response, means the situation will probably get worse, the film argues.

So-called tax inversions, in which U.S. companies take a foreign address to lower their tax burdens, have become an increasingly popular maneuver  --and a hot political issue.

The result is a film that is in parts heavy-handed, and sometimes disjointed, but praise-worthy for *making sense of* the arcane subject of corporate taxes.

Corruption 'impoverishes and kills millions'

A report by the anti-poverty organisation One says much of the progress made over the past two decades in tackling extreme poverty has been put at risk by corruption and crime.

Corrupt activities include the use of phantom firms and money laundering.

The report blames corruption for 3.6 million deaths every year.
If action were taken to end *secrecy* that allows corruption to thrive - and if the recovered revenues were invested in health —-the group calculates that many deaths could be prevented in low-income countries.

One describes its findings as a "trillion dollar scandal".

REPORT FINDS LACK OF TRUST IN ALASKA GUARD COMMAND [Excerpts]

A scathing report into allegations of sexual assault and fraud in the Alaska National Guard finds that victims do not trust the system because of a lack of confidence in the command.

The report, released Thursday, was requested by Gov. Sean Parnell, who said he was angry that it had taken several years to get to the bottom of concerns.

He told reporters from Anchorage that he had requested and received the resignation of Alaska National Guard Adjutant Gen. Thomas Katkus.  Parnell said the buck stopped with Katkus.
