[Excerpts]

. . .in this article, I argue that the carnage in Iraq and Syria is due to policies adapted by five major actors: The US, Israel, the Gulf Arab countries --primarily Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-- Iran and Turkey.

The US destruction of the infrastructure of Iraq was comprehensive, profound and fundamental.  The Shiite government that came to power in 2005, unsurprisingly with the support of the US, could not establish a functioning government.

Unable to resolve the growing implacable [Shiite - Sunni] hatred it helped to foster, in December 2011 the US withdrew its armed forces but left 15,000 advisers, diplomats and armed contractors in place -- most of whom are still in Iraq.

Israel and its supporters also contributed to the 2003 war and subsequent developments.  They contributed by having the support of US pro-Israel neo-conservatives, pro-Israel and Jewish lobbies.  The main reason for this support was that these lobbies thought regime change in Baghdad would bring pro-American governments to power in Iraq and Syria.  This would result in things such as destroying the Shiite Lebanese Hezbollah resistance to Israel.

The Gulf Arab states, because of their deep antagonism to Shiite Iran and fear of their own 3 to 4 million Shiite populations, avidly supported the war against Iraq and currently support jihadists.  They, along with Israel and the US, thought this would restore strong positions for Sunnis, albeit a minority in Iraq, and allow Sunnis to assume power in Syria, where they are 70 percent of the population.

While Iran did not contribute militarily to the war in Iraq, after the surge of fighting from 2006-2008, it strengthened further its already strong relations with the al-Maliki government.

Turkey contributed immensely to the 2003 war and the ensuing civil war. It did so for one primary reason: to destroy or weaken the Kurdish nationalist movement in Turkey and Syria.

Because of Kurdish nationalist challenges, Turkey, in spite of public denials, continues to supply weapons and serve as transit for arms and aid to jihadist forces, especially the Islamic State
formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria [ISIS]) fighters battling Kurdish nationalist forces in northern Syria.

The result of the above developments has now led to a formidable amalgam of radical Arab nationalism mixed in a heady brew of Muslim religious nationalism creating a new ideological paradigm in the central Arab Middle East.  It will be a major challenge for the US, Europe, Israel, the Gulf Arabs, Iran and Turkey to defeat this new emerging movement.

INITIAL REVIEW OF IRAQ FORCES DONE; NO DECISIONS [Excerpts]

"There will be a matter of some time here as we work our way through what the assessment says," Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said. "Everybody knows and shares a sense of urgency about what's going on in Iraq but it's more important to get this issue right than to get it quick.”
