Telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki. 


Mr al-Maliki briefed Mr Putin on military and political developments in Iraq and the measures the authorities are taking to combat the terrorist groups that have intensified their activity in the north of the country. 


The two leaders noted that the activities of extremists engaged in military operations in Syria have become cross-border in nature and are jeopardising the entire region’s security. 


Mr Putin reiterated Russia’s full support for the Iraqi government’s efforts to liberate Iraqi territory from the terrorists’ hands as quickly as possible. 


Mr Putin and Mr al-Maliki also discussed bilateral cooperation matters of mutual interest.  









Australian troops sent to Iraq to help secure embassy [Excerpts]

A spokesman for the defence minister, David Johnston, said a “small Australian Defence Force liaison element” had been deployed to the embassy in Baghdad as the security situation deteriorated. 

The troops are already in the capital but the spokesman would not say when they left Australia.

VA: 80 PERCENT OF SENIOR EXECUTIVES GOT BONUSES [Excerpts] 




More than 350 VA executives were paid a total of $2.7 million in bonuses last year, said Gina Farrisee, assistant VA secretary for human resources and administration. 

Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, said the VA's bonus system "is failing veterans." 

Instead of being given for outstanding work, the cash awards are "seen as an entitlement and have become irrelevant to quality work product," Miller said.

In warning letters given to employees and obtained by The Associated Press, Revel said it is seeking a buyer for the struggling $2.4 billion casino, but can't guarantee one will be found. 

If not, employees could be terminated as soon as Aug. 18, Revel said in the letter.


Shortly after distributing the letters, Revel filed a Chapter 11 petition in federal bankruptcy court, its *second* in as many years.
